Ariel blinks in
confusion as she contemplates the direction she should be heading, considering
the fact that the Clinic is not that far from her current position.
But she’s pretty sure that she’s seen this wall of recruitment posters a few times already…
While she’s still deep in thought, a figure takes notice of her posture and approaches her. “Ariel? Is everything okay?”
Ariel, as usual, jumps.
“Wah!” She whirls around to find the culprit, who also took a step back from her outburst in shock. “D-Don’t just scare me like that! Goodness gracious; I swear…”
Tharmen merely laughs a little, Ariel huffs as she places her hands on her hips when he arches an eyebrow at her. “So where are you planning to go? You look lost.”
So on top of being actually lost, she was even looking the part of being lost?
Geez, this is embarrassing.
“Well… I was trying to find my way to the Clinic. You don’t suppose you could spare a second to point me the way?” Tharmen nods, and instantly points at the direction of a hallway she failed to notice before. She feels like slapping herself for her stupidity there, honestly… “Right. That way. Thanks again!”

She feels like slapping herself for her stupidity there, honestly… “Right. That way. Thanks again!”
Ariel dryly laughs,
though Tharmen doesn’t noticed the difference and laughs along with her before
he departs with a short farewell. She slumps, sighing as she drags herself to
the clinic with unwilling feet.
She nearly gives
herself a heart attack when she almost crashes into someone.
“! Woah there!”
Ariel exclaims, eyes wide as saucers as she barely held herself back in time
from colliding into Dila, Shah’s assistant. The other lady lets out a sigh of
relief, tension gone from Dila when the other recognizes Ariel.
“I thought which
idiot was not looking where they were going…”
Ariel nervously
laughs in agreement with Dila’s words. “How harsh~ I was worried that I’m late
for my check-up, so I didn’t really look at where I was going…”
Dila fondly sighs
and nods. “That’s true; though you are actually on time! So come on in while I
sort things out.”
Ariel shuffles in
after the older female, her electric blue sport shoes a stark contrast to the white
spotless tiled floor. Mindful to at least close the door behind her, the young
supervisor takes her time to look around the clinic.
“? Is Dr. Shah not
in yet?”
“Ah, he’s in town
after someone called in for emergency. He’ll be here shortly.” Dila pulls out a
pale pink folder from the shelf behind a desk that has Dr. Shah’s name plate,
flipping quickly through the almost endless stack of papers before her face
lights up. “Found it! Could you take a seat on the examination bed? Oh, and do
pass me your appointment card so I can stamp you out later.”
Ariel does as she’s
told, heaving herself onto the bed and swinging her legs back-and-forth since
her feet can’t touch the ground. If Aaron and Eric were to see this side of
her, they would surely tease her of being so childlike.
Just then, Dila
walks over, a clipboard of what Ariel assumes is her observation records in one
hand, wheeling a chair over as Dila gestures to the examination tools next to
her.
“Now then, here’s
what we’re going to do today: We’ll be doing a blood sampling, the usual height
& weight measurements, some test on your body’s fitness, and then we’ll
have you undergo a scan. Though of course, the scan will be done by Dr. Shah
himself. I’ll just be settling the rest with you, is that clear?”
Dila seems
satisfied when Ariel nods her head in understanding. “Good. Then let’s begin.
Please relax while I check your blood pressure.”
Time passes by
quickly, in other words, as slowly as possible as Ariel lets herself be prodded
and poked with. By the time Dr. Shah enters the scene, Ariel herself could be
seen sweating from running on the treadmill.
“Oh? How’s her
fitness level, Dila?”
“Ah, welcome back,
Dr. Shah. Her levels is average at best, though there are slightly higher than
average levels of fats than should be in her.” Dila muses aloud, while Ariel
can distinctively feel her face colored red from embarrassment. “I’ve already prepped
the room for scanning, so I’ll just run these data in the system while she’s
been scanned.”
Ariel blinks. “So
I’ll be able to get my report by today? That’s quick.”
Dr. Shah nods.
“Yes. Though the official, printed, report will only be ready in two days’
time. The electronic copy will be immediately delivered to both the Marshall
and yourself.” Ariel lets herself be guided to another room, where she is
allowed to change into some hospital garment behind a changing screen.
“Please lie down on
the bed so we can begin.”
Ariel obediently
follows his order, the whirring noise of the machine coming to life the only
sound heard in the room until Dr. Shah speaks again, telling her the usual
procedure and how long the process would take. It’s not long, she thinks to
herself, since she last seen one of these machines to not know how they work.
In the end, the
check-up was smoothly done. With the declaration of a green bill of health and a
discrete advice to work out more, Ariel leaves the office after confirming her
charges’ appointment. A sigh makes itself known when a particular thought comes
across her mind.
“How I wish this
normalcy can last longer…”
