TBVF: Chapter 5: Great Minds Think Alike
Title: The Blue Vast Future
Author: Ariel Chew
Genre: Sci-Fi, Humor, Friendship, Family
Summary: A SB#187 team aged-up to be in a Kaiju battle. Ariel’s merely a 21-year-old supervisor of Gamma Rapper, but with all the training of the Academy she has, will it prepare her for the biggest turns of events of the century?
~*~
The six of them finishes and clears the table, tapping their individual staff card against the little white box next to the cash register as they leave the Mess Hall. It’s convenient, Ariel muses to herself, since the payment would be done eventually at the end of the month by deducting the salary of the individual unless the person opts to pay on the spot.
At a brief thought of Aaron’s food expenses, Ariel cringes.
These are the reason why she couldn’t help her worry over them, seeing the bills made to pay for their ‘vaping’ habits and all. She doesn’t exactly see the appeal in using such methods to cope with stress, with how the pilots are ought to be public role models and their age, but in the end she keeps all these to herself. They are old enough to know what’s right or wrong, so who is she to judge what they do, right?
The next on her to-do list, after bidding farewell to the others, is the Jaegar Bay. As Aaron and Eric decides on a sparring match in the Kwoon Room while the Beta Strucker trio goes off to do what they have to do, Ariel is left alone in her journey to visit the Gamma Rapper’s J-Team. Noises increases in its volume all around her the closer she approaches the bay, and as she closes the distance between her and Gamma Rapper’s Hanger, the more familiar jackets with Gamma Rapper’s logo of an outline of a Golden Retriever formed by the names of the Jaegar and its pilots.
Instinctively, she looks up, breathing in the beauty of the cerulean-blue coat of Gamma Rapper. A Jaegar born for speed and agility, Gamma Rapper stands at a proud stature of 150-ft. high. It’s the only Jaegar fully made from aero graphite, the lightest metal on Earth that gives its advantage for smooth aerodynamic in its attack up against high-speed Kaiju. Being a member of Gen. III Jaegars, Gamma Rapper is installed with electric core, unlike Gen. II Beta Strucker that relies on nuclear-powered core.
She spots Faiz, one of Gamma Rapper’s J-tech, and jogs up towards him.
“Faiz!” The male startles, looking up from his hand-held digital device before he relaxes when he realizes who had called him. He waves back; careful to not drop the device he’s holding as Ariel approaches, curiosity evident. “What’s that thing you’re holding there? Some sort of reading device?”
“Yes. More like reading the volume of energy current the electric core supplies to the Jaegar as well as the intake of electric current to the core.” Faiz explains, tapping a few keys on the screen as a graph appears, the chart fluctuating so ever to indicate the flow of energy current.
“…Wow. Looks amazing.” Truthfully, she has no idea what she’s looking at, merely saying it for the sake of saying something smart. But she must have said something right, because Faiz smiles and nods at her words.
“Isn’t it? Though it’s a pity that we’re still using the old model.” Faiz frowns, staring at the device as though he’s thinking about something else. “Other Shatterdomes like the ones in Japan and Anchorage are already using new models that can even forecast energy consumption of new parts just by keying in the serial numbers of the parts.”
“Eh? Does that mean it’s live?” Ariel blinks, amazement written across her face.
Faiz nods. “Yeah, All the parts that we purchased are in the database of the PPDC, so by going live, the device is able to capture all the information of the new parts without us having trial and error.”
Ariel thinks, nodding to his words. Alas, if their budget is enough to get such upgrades…
“Yo, Faiz! How’s the reading coming along?” A voice that makes Ariel blink in surprise, familiarity reeling her back from sentiment as a dark-skinned J-tech approaches them, his eyes meeting hers as recognition sinks into him. “Oh? If it isn’t the little mermaid!”
“Fii~!” Ariel cheers, prompting laughter from Fitri and Faiz over Fitri’s nickname. She doesn’t seem to be aware of her own nickname, her expression turned into one of an overjoyed child. “You’re back! It’s been a few days since you came to work. You’re feeling all better now?”
He grins widely. “Yeap. All thanks to your ‘Get-Well-Soon’ messages, I’m all better now.” She’s glad that he’s back, but most importantly that he’s recovered.
After hearing that he failed to report to work due to a case of high blood pressure, resulting in headaches that made Fitri unable to even get out of bed, Ariel had made it a point to write little notes to Fitri, with Faiz as the messenger since the two technicians share a place.
“Ah! Almost forgot.” Fitri lightly smacks the top of his head, seeming like he just remembered something as he ruffles through a folder she didn’t noticed him carrying before. He pulls put a few sheets of paper that have been stapled together and hands it to Ariel. “Here: The Maintenance Report for this week. If there’s anything else you need, just let me know.”
She sucks in a deep breath as she then recalls why she came here. “Wah! Thank you so much, Fii! I actually forgotten about it… But! Thank you again!” She bows gratefully, Fitri and Faiz returning the gesture. Perhaps it’s because of their shared interest in Anime is what made them friends, work aside, that they even practice little Japanese tradition once in a while when they meet.
“Well if it’s all the same to you, I would like to discuss some things with Faiz personally.” Ariel nods, taking a few steps back from the two. She waves both of them off, pointing towards a distant bench not too far from them.
“No worries. I’m going to take some time skimming through these before I go.”
Once she takes a seat, she begins her routine of reading through the report. There’s that damage report that she was concerned over, when Gamma Rapper battled a scorpion-like Kaiju off the coast of Sarawak. It was a good thing that the acid merely melted the protective plate thanks to Gamma Rapper’s fast reaction, thus preventing the strong acid from damaging the inner nerve cabling of the Jaegar.
She reads on, noting important information like how each casualty affects the Jaegar or how the newest parts fare in the fight. It’s a gamble, she thinks, to implement the new software. But isn’t life is, living each day hoping to not fall at Kaiju’s attacks?
She closes the papers and stands. No point wasting so much time on overthinking such matters when she has more important issues to attend to.
“Sorry to interrupt: Faiz, Fitri, thank you both for the hard work!” She apologizes, attracting amused looks shared between the two guys as she continues. “I’ll get going now, so see you both some other time!”
“Alright! Bye, and have a nice day!” Fitri calls after her as she leaves, the girl merely waving to them over her shoulder without fully turning around.
Now, off to her last destination before the afternoon meeting: The K-Science Lab.
“Joey~!” She opens the door with a loud greeting, startling all occupants inside as she strides in with light footsteps. “I has arrive for food~”
“Ariel! Good to have you here; Come, come.” The head K-lab officer ushers the girl over to an empty desk, where a few containers laid, covered. “Help yourself to some cookies and eggrolls. Tea or coffee?”
“Plain water will be fine.” She replies simply. Instantly Joey snaps her fingers at Shahnur, a fellow lab-scientist, who looks like a deer caught by headlights of a hunting party. “Ano! A cup of water if you have nothing else urgent to do?”
“Okay! One cup of water for the little mermaid!” Shahnur laughs, darting away as soon as Ariel glares at him over the nickname. He returns soon after, approaching cautiously to a sulking Ariel. “Sorry, sorry; don’t get angry, yeah~”
“Meanie…” She pouts, before turning to open a can of pineapple tarts and munches on one.
“How is it? Nice or not, Mei-Mei?” Izwin joins the three, taking a seat next to Ariel who brightens and offers the head assistant the pineapple tarts.
“It’s deliciously fluffy and sweet!” She chirps, Izwin making a pleased face until Joey nudges her assistant.
“Don’t praise her too much; I helped made them too.”
At this, Ariel giggles. “I know~ It’s delicious because you two made it with love, right, Ano?”
“Mm-mm.” He muffles out a respond, chewing on two pineapple tarts at the same time. He gives a guilty smile when all three females stare at him, shrinking a little under their collective gaze.
At the corner of the room, staring intently into the lens of a microscope is Aaron Lim. Ariel purses her lips together: Why is he by himself all the way there, isolated from them? “Aaron? Won’t you join us for a bit?”
He perks up, blinking in confusion until their gazes meet did he relax at her comforting smile. “Sure. I’m getting a little hungry; a snack would be good.”
“Then you should try these pineapple tarts that Joey and Izwin baked!” Shahnur loudly suggests, as Aaron takes a seat next to the smaller male. The five resume their little tea party, until Ariel remembers what she came here for.
Her memory capability is really like goldfish’s memory…
“Ah--! The data!”
“’The data’?” Shahnur blankly echoes, stunned from Ariel’s sudden words. She nods, turning to Joey. “Yup! I came to know more about the new system.”
“Oh~ I thought you came for the cookies? Ouch! I’m sorry!” Shahnur winces as Ariel hits him on his shoulder, a blush dusting her cheeks.
“Are you implying that I only think about food?!”
“Eh, isn’t that why you’re assigned to be Gamma Rapper’s supervisor—Ow, ow! It really hurts! Have mercy!” She folds her arm and faces away from him, huffs in silent anger while he rubs his arm pitifully, probably wondering why she’s so sensitive about it.
If Ariel were in a better mood, maybe she would tell him it’s a female thing.
Ah, not like he’ll understand.
“Mah, jokes aside. Since you’re here for the data, I may as well demonstrate to you now.” Shahnur says, stuffing another pineapple tart into his mouth before he stands, moving quickly to his desk where his trusty laptop awaits. Ariel slightly admires his work; Being a coding specialist in K-engineering is not an easy task, and Johor Bahru Shatterdome is the only one with two under its roof: The first being Shahnur, and the other Zhofri. There used to be Ariff as well, but apparently he got transferred to Monado Shatterdome, Indonesia, before she got the chance to see him unleash his full potential.
After taking one more piece of the sweet tart, she too takes a stand to join Shahnur at his desk. Soon everyone in the lab gathers around the K-engineer’s desk, while said person hooks his laptop to the V.I.D. (Virtual Imaging Device).
“Alright, Shahnur, Aaron; the floor’s yours.” Joey gestures, leaving the theoretical issues of the software to the two K-engineers since they are the ones who are really involved in this project. Shahnur beams, clearing his throat to begin.
“For the past three months, we’ve been collaborating with Aaron, in secret, to develop the newest update of the existing software that’s been giving us unceasing headaches. Cuscapi is great when it’s working normally, but when it suddenly freezes on us in the middle of fighting a very real Kaiju… You know the rest of the story.” Shahnur jokes, dryly. Ariel knows, of course; Her first week joining the Shatterdome, Gamma Rapper and Beta Strucker went head-to-head with a Kaiju that looked like a flying fish, but had a body of a swordfish.
The Kaiju had the ability of suddenly leaping towards its target at full speed, which was how the Flying-Sword Kaiju managed to knock Beta Strucker into the deeper waters, had not Gamma Rapper reflexively dived to pull Beta Strucker out of a damaging blow, Beta Strucker’s nuclear core would have been neatly removed by the Kaiju’s razor-sharp snout.
“So the new software will be better in not dying on us in mid-battle?” Ariel inquiries.
Aaron nods. “Yes; this is because the software will be running on dual-core energy sources. In the event that the electric source is cut, we still have the Jaegars.”
“The Jaegars?”
“Yeah. This software will be implemented in the Jaegars as well as the main system, so should the main system fail from, say, an electric shortage, the installed batteries in the Jaegar will be activated to give feedback to the Control Room.” Shahnur supplies.
“Wait.” Ariel folds her arms across her chest, staring pointedly at Shahnur. “The Jaegar is suppose to be a giant suit, right? Jaegars rely on its core for energy supply for the parts to move in accordance to the commands of the pilots. Where are we going to fit the batteries?”
Joey nods. “That was also my question when they first explained to me. But that is the job of the J-techs to incorporate it into the machine.”
“There’s a possibility that they’ll install it into the Conn-Pod.” Izwin suggests.
Ariel’s frown deepens. “You mean where the pilots will be in the Jaegar? How bulky will the batteries be?”
“The size of a car’s battery? A battery that size would be sufficient for a system to run should the main source is shorted.” Shahnur smiles, trying to reassure her as she listens intently to his explanation. “It’s made from lithium ion, so it will have a shorter recharge time from the core as well if the battery runs out of energy. But that will be unlikely since a fight between Kaiju and Jaegar is less than five hours.” The K-engineer taps a few keys on the Imaging Device, a 3-D image shines in center of attention as Shahnur clears his throat.
“This is how the system would appear to the pilots. As usual, nothing is changed much in the Conn-Pod, except for the control screen for the pilots. There will be a few amendments to the access panels; some would require the use of touch-screen function while others would need the manual keys on the side of the screen. That being said,” Shahnur reaches to the image, making adjustments with the holographic image until another scene is revealed. “The battery will be behind of the pilots instead of being between them or in front of them. That shouldn’t be a hindrance to their movement, I hope.”
Ariel nods, scratching the back of her neck. “If that’s the case… Then I have no qualms about it.”
“I agree. Anyway,” Joey clasps Ariel on the shoulder, pointing to the younger female’s watch. “It’s about time for your meeting. Go on: We’ll meet again soon.”
With those words, Ariel leaves the lab to the Control Room. She arrives sharply before familiar sliding doors, her shoulders tensing briefly while she rocks herself back and forth on the heels of her feet. There is no doubt on the worry no surfacing from the back of her mind as to why she is summoned.
The fact that they are only a handful of people attending this meeting serve to make her worries even more pronounced.
Ah. May as well enter rather than wasting pointless time fretting.
