{When he was a child}
Fili entered the healing house, with Uncle Thorin guiding him as the two made their way to Dis. As Dis was the younger sister of Thorin and the princess of Erebor, she was given a room at the second highest floor for privacy. Fili remembered to be quiet just like his uncle had instructed him as they entered the room.
The instant the door to the room had closed, Fili grinned and ran over to his mother, who was cradling a bundle that Fili suspected was his younger sibling. Neither Dis nor Uncle Thorin told him whether his sibling was a male or a female, but Dis smiled faintly and stooped a little, allowing Fili to peer at the child.
"Fili, this is your brother Kili. From today onwards, you will have to protect and take care of him, alright?"
Kili, who awoke from his mother's voice, started to cry a little from his disturbed sleep. Fili just gently carried Kili, under the watchful eyes of Uncle Thorin and Dis, cradling him and trying to sooth the infant. To the adults' surprise, Kili actually went silent and stared adoringly at Fili, with big, wet and anticipating eyes as Fili introduced himself.
"Hello Kili. My name's Fili, and I'll be your big brother starting from today!"
Maybe it was Fili's enthusiasm, or perhaps it was his honesty, but either way Kili giggled and held out a chubby hand towards his brother, who took the small hand in his bigger one and both siblings laughed together. Dis laughed too, with Thorin showing a rare smile at the sight before them.
It seemed that this brotherly bond would never break, but would provide a great asset for the future of Durin. Afterall, Kili has a big brother who would watch over him.
~*~
{When he was a youth}
It came as a surprise; Fili had not expected it coming. No, he had not even dreamt of the possibility of it happening. He walked home with the expression of the dead, unsure of how to take in of what Uncle Thorin had told him a few hours ago.
"Fili, you are my heir. After me, you will be the next King under the Mountain."
Fili remembered asking him, pleading him with his mind wishing it was all just a horrible dream and he would like to wake up now. But it wasn't a dream.
It was reality.
Fili had to take on extra trainings and lessons from various teachers, and to think that one of them would be Thorin, starting tomorrow.
Tomorrow.
What would he tell Kili? His brother? Should the substitute that is Fili dies, Kili would take his place. Uncle Thorin said to not tell him, but Kili would know of this matter in the near future. No doubt his mother already knew and predicted this would happen.
But Fili must be strong, even in such circumstances, for his family. And especially Kili. What about now? His mind taunts him as Fili nears towards the front door of his house. What can he tell Kili? Surely Kili would want to know of what happened earlier, with Fili's face so pale and terrified Kili would be able to tell.
Gulping down his fears, Fili opened the door and slowly made his way to their room. His hand hesitated, for the first and last time, at the door knob to their room. His mind again was paralysed with fear. He did not want his brother to hate him, and he did not want to lie.
But in his heart he thanked Aulë that he need not fear, for the door opened to a fast-asleep Kili laying on Fili's bed (How many times has this been already? They may as well throw out Kili's bed and just share a single bed).
Fili was exhausted and troubled, yet he managed to put aside his fears and fall asleep next to his brother, not wanting to indulge in the mere thought of tomorrow.
~*~
{When he was growing up}
Fili could feel it. There was some kind of presence that he could not grasp in the air. Today, Fili and Kili had joined Thorin on a scouting mission. There has been some sightings of orcs around the borders, none of the dwarves are stupid enough to leave this matter be. Hence, the two nephews decided to accompany their uncle to check if it was true.
"Fili, Kili, set up a camp here. It'll soon be night. I'll go search for some wood for the fire."
Fili ignored the nagging feeling and set to work. In moments, there was a fire going as the three gathered around the fire. Good thing Kili had remembered to bring some food ration along; The last time Kili had forgotten, the younger dwarf was forcefully sent out to hunt for food and ended up surrounded by a pack of wargs.
Kili stared at him, his eyes shone bright under the illumination of the camp fire that provided limited heat as he searched Fili's eyes to seek the reason to Fili's agitation.
"What?"
"You're looking pale. Are you alright?"
Kili was now inching closer to Fili, his eyebrows knitted closely with worry. Fili wondered when Kili had grown up to be so mature. Fili was always the serious minded in the family (Excluding Thorin) whereas Kili was a carefree dwarfling in an adult's body.
But now, their roles have reversed. Minutes earlier, Thorin had went further away from the camp to keep watch after he ordered the two to rest for the night. Kili prodded his older brother for answers but received none except words of "I'm alright, really" which did not sway Kili from his objective.
"Come on Fili! Stop being like this and tell me what's going on! You've been looking around yourself as if some elves would spring up from the bushes and attack us." As though Fili would squirm away from him, Kili tightly grip his brother's arms to prevent the older to move without feeling pain of wrenching his arm.
If there was one sentence to describe the two brothers' relationship, it would be that Fili always crumble before Kili's stubbornness. No sooner had Kili pressed his brother, Fili started spilling every single worry on his mind.
"—Kili, we really shouldn't have come. This place is dangerous! What if we were suddenly ambush? There's only three of us and unknown number of them! Uncle Thorin might get killed on his watch! Worst still, we might even die before we let the rest of the villagers know that there are enemies lurking around!"
Kili snorted, stifling his giggles that threatened to erupt to laughters.
"What's so funny?! Kili!! I'm being serious here!!"
"Pfft! Ghhk! N-No! I-I mean! Pfft!!"
Fili incredulously stared at his brother, still angry but confuse at Kili's reaction. What did he say that made Kili laugh so bad that tears were forming in his eyes?
"Oh, Fili! You worry too much!" Kili's laughter finally came to a stop, his hand wiped away the stray tears that made its mark on his face. "You always said that I was a coward when I was a young age, but look at you! Come on, we have our Uncle Thorin who dares to stand against King Thranduil of Mirkwood and Lord Elrond of Rivendell, a master of dual-swordsmanship which is you, and me, the best and only archer of Durin. Who then can defeat the three of us? We are unstoppable as a team!"
Kili added, albeit quietly than earlier.
"Besides, we still have to reclaim Erebor from Smaug. The horrible beast will taste our wrath! And then–" Fili thought for a moment that Kili was too enthusiastic until he heard the next few words that came out of his mouth. "–I shall brag to my future wife of my great exploits!!"
"YOUR great exploit? What happened to the 'We are unstoppable as a team'?"
Fili tackled his brother, and the two proceeded to grapple each other as they rolled around in breathless laughter.
Thorin came back in the break of dawn, his anger of Kili forgetting to take over his watch died in his throat as he saw his two nephews laid in a tangle of limbs, snoring away with their grunts loud enough to wake a bear up from it's hibernation. Thorin shook his head.
"These two idiots are still so hopeless."
Without sparing another thought, Thorin raised his voice and shouted.
"WAKE UP YOU FOOLS!!"

{When he was remorseful}
Fili woke up to a room filled with silence. He rubbed his bleary eyes that contented to stay for a short while more, until he remembered that Kili was not around the room did his vision cleared and he jumped out from his bed to search for his brother.
Well, Kili wasn't in the showers, nor was he in the kitchen since Dis was there all morning cooking. Apparently Kili had went out with Gimli (Without eating breakfast, much to Dis' chagrin) to spar, and he has not return for several hours already. Admitting defeat, Fili slumped onto the dining chair as Dis placed a plate of sliced bread with meat on the side before him.
"Don't look so down. Kili just went out for a while. He'll be fine. Besides, this is not the first time since the two of you separate from each other."
Dis comforted her older son as she set down a bowl of luscious tomato soup next to his plate of food. Dis always knew that Fili and Kili were inseparable, the last time Balin tried to take a child Fili out to the library, the toddler Kili wept and screamed until poor Fili was forced to postpone his visit the next time Kili was asleep. Dis was glad that her two sons were very close to each other, unlike how her brothers Thorin and Frerin often fought over every single thing, leaving Dis to be the peacemaker and the two boys with bruised foreheads.
"Ma, I know that he went out. It's just like that one time when Kili ran out to Gimli's house without telling anyone. It's just so frustrating!"
Fili grumbled as he took another bite at his meat-in-a-bread, ignoring his mother's disapproving looks at his last sentence.
"Well, you were so worried that you told Thorin to round up a search party for Kili when you could have search the places he always go to."
Dis teased. Fili scowled and pouted slightly, remembering how radiant and happy Kili was when he returned home. On the other hand, Fili was so relieved that he nearly wept at the sight of his brother in front of everyone.
"I'm not the idiot who causes trouble and worry for others."
Dis smacked the back of his head, earning a painful 'Ow!' from her son who dropped his spoon into the soup to nurse his growing bruise.
"Kili is old enough to do what he wants. He's no longer a child, Fili. I know you worry because in your eyes he'll always be the same baby brother whom you cradled as an infant. But you must understand, he's NO longer a child. Kili has a mind of his own."
Dis turned her back on Fili to clean the dishes, leaving Fili at the table with his nearly finished tomato soup.
"Yeah. I know that."
Fili mused to himself before drinking the last spoonful of soup before handing it over to his mother. Dis never heard Fili's quiet whispers as he walked out of the dining room.
"I wish he had never grown up."
~*~
{When he was cradling death}
"Fee... I'll wait for you..."
No. Fili's mind screamed. NO.
This can't be happening. There's no way his brother, his baby brother, was dying.
In his arms.
Dear Aulë, may this be some kind of twisted nightmare that he couldn't wake up. Fili sobbed, pressing his face into his brother's neck, the war fading into nothing but noises in the background.
"No..." Fili whispered, his every being broken and shattered as he held his brother's body closer to him. Kili was getting colder, since his heart had already stopped beating for a long time.
Thorin. The name flashed urgently in his mind as Fili recalled the unconscious state of his uncle being carried by Balin and Dwalin. There was no way that Thorin could survived, but Fili could really care less.
Letting out a blood-thirsty, anguish-filled roar as Fili stood, his eyes had tears in them that blurred his vision while he made a mad dash towards the nearest Orc and hack it to pieces.
For Kili. For Thorin. For Erebor. His mind said as he slayed one Orc after another, his entire being guarding his brother's corpse–BODY from enemies. There were other dwarves fighting, alongside with elves firing arrows at the Orcs.
Archery. Kili had loved archery.
But that was taken away from Kili. Both Kili and Thorin was taken away from him. Fili screamed as he slashed another warg down with its rider, recalling his brother flirting shamelessly at a female elf named Tauriel.
What would Dis say? Dis would never forgive Fili. Nor will she forgive Thorin. Tears were streaming openly down his cheeks, wet his beard as he fought on.
Fili was tired, he ignored his body's protest on its wounds as he fought the last Orc till all the enemies were vanquished did he stopped. Every dwarf and elf alike cheered at their victory, but Fili ignored them all as he dragged himself towards his brother.
Only once he stopped fighting did he felt the searing pain though his abdomen. His abdomen was sliced open, revealing his inner muscles and organs whereas his chest was afflicted with knife stabs. Fili collapsed onto his knees, too tired to even cry as he fell face first next to his brother. He looked at Kili's face, smiling painfully as he mumbled his last words before he passed on.
"I'm coming, Kili. I'm coming for you..."
~*~
Three bodies were laid side-by-side in the middle of every fallen elf and dwarf. A female dwarf stood, sober but barely holding it together with a male hobbit next to her. Her name was Dis, the younger sister of Thorin and the mother of Fili and Kili. His name was Bilbo Baggins, the burglar and friend of the 13 dwarves on the quest to reclaim Erebor. The two stood in silence, alongside with other survivors who surrounded them, three of them Dain the II, Gandalf the Grey and Thranduil of Mirkwood. Dis spoke, loud enough for Bilbo to hear.
"My brother Frerin and my grandfather Thror died in battle. Now, my two sons and my brother died in this war. I am the sole survivor of the family, isn't this pathetic?"
Dis broke into tears, her hands covering her face as she mourned for her family. Bilbo could do nothing but stand at the side, shuffling from one feet to another as he answered.
"They died reclaiming their homeland. They wouldn't want to see you crying over them."
Dis stared at him, her expression haggard and there was something else there that seemed unreadable.
"I am their mother and his sister. No matter how heroic their actions are that had cost them their lives, I will be in grief of them because they are my family." Dis added. "I rather have them alive in Blue Mountain than dead in our homeland."
Bilbo understood. For a mother, lives of their loved ones are more important than their individual lives. So for Dis, life for her would never be the same, even for years to come.
Bilbo's life, was also, never the same.
