{When he was little}

There they go again, screaming and fighting as Kili and Fili huddled beneath the safety of the covers. Their mother, Dis, had caught their father drunk and babbling of dwarf women, which no doubt the unfamiliar new scent on his father had given him away.

Kili swore that he had heard the front door slam open, and it seemed to him that Fili had heard it too, and in stormed heavy footsteps, with a voice low and grave the two children could identify this as their favourite uncle Thorin. Their uncle's voice send Kili to bury himself to his brother's protective side. The dreadful bellows, the ear-splitting screams of Dis telling their father to 'Get out and NEVER come back' and the door severely shut had the two brothers hugging each other for comfort.

"Fee? Do you think Mama's alright?"

Fili nodded, momentarily forgotten that they were in the dark and were supposed to sleep few hours ago.

"Maybe. Since Uncle Thorin is there with Mama."

Kili shifted so he wasn't sitting anymore, but laid down at his brother's side of the bed.

"Okay."

Fili felt himself moving as well, blindly feeling for his pillow before setting his head on it. He turned to where he assumed his brother's face was, and he whispered:

"Let's sleep. Everything will be fine in the morning."

Although Kili knew those words held no hope in them, so he clutched his brother's warm hand and fell into a dreamless sleep.

{When he was a teen}

He hadn't missed his father after some guards came and announced the death of the man who had cheated on his mother. Some freak accident happened during his trip for some trading business, but Kili could really care less. Dis, cried a little at his funeral, out of grief or out of joy that she had no further need to face such person ever again, Kili knew nothing of it. The father figure he always knew and respect was Uncle Thorin, who took care of them when his father was away for business trips, and even told them bedtime stories of Erebor, the homeland of the dwarves before Smaug the dragon came and destroy it.

"–Kili? Are you even listening to what I'm saying?"

Fili crossed his arms, giving a stern face which Kili thought that many others would think that Fili was not his brother, but Uncle Thorin's son. Kili grinned and shook his head. His brother sighed at his attitude.

"Good grief! Were you day-dreaming of some dwarf lass that had caught your eye? Oh, never mind! Have you seen Uncle Thorin?"

Kili shook his head. What was it that Fili was saying much earlier when he wasn't listening? Something about Uncle Thorin, no doubt. And speaking of which, wasn't he supposed to pass on a message to Fili...?

"Fili, I remember something like Uncle wanting to meet you at the forge. I think he wanted to tell you something..."

"That was what I've been asking!" Fili huffed, his blonde hair radiated the aura of a prince of Durin's lineage. "If that's the case, I better be going then. Go straight back home now, you hear me?"

Fili did not notice his brother had nodded almost absent-mindedly, or perhaps he had dismissed it since he was in a hurry. Kili waited for a few minutes before following him, taking a shorter route to the forge to eavesdrop on what Uncle Thorin had decided to tell the older child of Dis and excluding the younger child.

Upon arrival a the forge, Kili crept as silently as possible to the empty room beside Uncle Thorin's office where Fili had disappeared into to talk with Uncle Thorin. Closing the door as gently as he could, he went to the hole in the wall where Fili and him often listen into Uncle Thorin's conversation with Dis on the two children's behaviour. He peered through the hole: There his brother was, sitting in front of Uncle Thorin. Kili held his breath to listen more clearly to their conversation.

"Have you not told Kili of this matter? Shouldn't he know?"

What was it that he needed to know? Kili thought as he watched Uncle Thorin sighed.

"You can't possibly tell him. I didn't want to tell you until you were slightly older, but your mother figured that you were mature enough to understand."

The first thing Kili thought was something along the lines where Fili was adopted and the next was Fili was going to get married. Kili silent his odd thoughts while Fili had a troubled expression.

"But! Why me? Why must I be the next heir to the throne? Surely there is someone else!"

Kili's eyes widened. Did he just hear correctly? That his brother was going to be King after Uncle Thorin? Uncle Thorin placed a pair of calloused hands on Fili's shoulders.

"Yes. You, as the first born of Dis, will be my heir. Kili shall be told of this sometime in the future. You must not tell him any of our conversation today. Understand?"

Kili took the hint that he should leave before his brother found out that he had heard everything they had said. With a heavy heart and a confused mind, Kili went straight home to his bed.

He'll sort this out some other time.

{When he was a little older}

A few seasons after Kili had eavesdropped into the conversation, Kili had a chance to train in the skill of fighting. Unlike him, Fili had already started somewhere after Fili knew of his duty of being the heir. It was very likely that Fili had spend extra hours in training and more time learning from Uncle Thorin, and less time had spend with Kili for preparation to be the next kin after Uncle Thorin.

Kili stared at the weapons in front of him. Fili had chosen a pair of dual swords, and in as much as Kili had dissuaded himself, Kili had wanted to practice in archery. Which Uncle Thorin might disowned him for wanting to learn a attack skill of elves. It wasn't his fault that he liked how skilful and graceful the archers are, despite that the archers were elves and dwarves hated elves. Kili frowned, in times like this, he wished he could just ask his brother for advice. Afterall, Dis was busy in the healing room and Uncle Thorin wouldn't be pleased if he asked.

So he waited. He stayed in his room the rest of the afternoon, when his brother returned at long last. Fili paused when he noticed Kili was fiddling around with his swords.

"Kili? What's wrong?"

Fili hastily sat next to Kili, alarmed at his brother sullen attitude. The younger mumbled something the older couldn't hear, which Fili requested for a repeat of what Kili had said but more louder the second try.

"Fili. I want to learn archery."

Six simple words plus Kili's worried expression was all that take for Fili to breath in relief. Kili was obviously wanting some sort of confirmation from Fili, but was nervous at his answer.

"... Okay."

Kili brightened and hugged him so tightly that it was starting to hurt. The two brothers shared a laugh, for what reason no one knows.

{When he was adventurous}

Durin knows how long was it since they had journeyed to reclaim Erebor. Gandalf had told them to go to the Shire and recruit their last member who will be their burglar. The burglar turned out to be a Hobbit, or a Halfling, named Bilbo Baggins. Mr. Boggins, the Durin brothers never learned to pronounced "Baggins", was utterly upset when all 13 dwarves and a wizard came to his house and at up months worth of food in the Hobbit's storage. Kili had fun washing the dishes and fooling around with Fili, enjoying the look of horror and suppressing the urge to commit suicide on Bilbo's face as dishes were neatly tossed across rooms and utensils sailed through the air.

It was, of course, no surprise that Bilbo had decided to join them after the last night spent in Bag-Ends. For now, they had stopped to camp at one of the caves as night came.

Kili wondered what was Uncle Thorin thinking of as the leader of the dwarves stood watch in a distance. Was he thinking of how to defeat Smaug the dragon or how life was in Erebor? Or was he thinking of maybe it was a mistake to take the younger members and the hobbit along? Could it be that he was reminiscing Frerin, who died in the battle with the orcs, or of Thror and Thrain?

Kili merely wondered, but never asked. His uncle was always so cold and strict, even as far as he could remember of his younger days, his uncle was always worried and anxious. Maybe by reclaiming Erebor, it meant that the line of Durin will be restored to the throne, and Uncle Thorin will have more responsibilities and burdens to carry. For a moment there, Kili distinctly wished that Fili was never the next in line. He wouldn't want Fili to turn into the next Uncle Thorin.

"Mmn... Kee... Sleep..."

Fili turned in his sleep, grabbing Kili's hand and tugged him to lay down on the floor than leaning against the walls. Kili complied, snuggling next to Fili as he joined his brother to sleep.

{When it was his turn}

The arrow from his bow flew and pierced through one of their enemies, killing it as Kili readied his next aim while searching for his next target when he saw Thorin fell.

His eyes on the brink of tears flashed anger as he roared, the next arrow reached its destination as an enemy fell. Kili dashed towards his uncle, preparing another arrow for defending his uncle. He saw Fili coming by, bloodied from a mixture of his blood and the enemies while slicing through them to get to Thorin.

The Battle of Five Armies, they called it, was turning for good. The dwarves were getting the upper hand, though there were still plenty of orcs to get rid of. Balin and Dwalin carried Thorin to a safer place, under the protection of the other dwarves like Fili and Kili who are determined to not let anyone interfere.

Kili was so absorbed in covering the others that he did not notice he was stabbed until he felt a little dizzy and collapsed. Fili rushed to his side, just in time to block a slash of a knife before Gloin came and help to kill the Orc.

Kili huffed, his breath was getting shorter and shorter and he could feel his heart slowing a little as Fili was yelling something.

"Kili!! Don't you dare die on me now! Didn't we promise we will go on more adventures? We even promised to visit Mr. Baggins again! Do you still remember?!"

Kili coughed. He tasted an unfamiliar taste of copper that dribbled past his chin. He never did grow a beard long enough like other dwarves. He looked into Fili's face and saw little tear droplets falling and landing on his face.

Fili rarely cried.

"Fee..."

Kili reached out and laid a hand on his brother's shoulders. Fili looked exhausted, wounds decorated his brother like vines decorate a desolated house and blood poured like a steady stream onto the floor. If it wasn't so ironic, Kili would have snorted at his sudden poetic self.

"I'll wait for you."

Then Kili fell into what seemed eternity as he thought he heard his brother screaming in the background.
