Fanfic: Girls' Job On Board

A/N: This was written and emailed to me by my beloved sister. Thanks sis! :D All I'm in charge for is editing and posting this up. Enjoy!

Masaki was at a helpless state, the early morning sun penetrated her vision, causing a massive pain in her eyeballs that resulted in a groan of dread as she slid out of bed, unwillingly obeying the morning as she changed into her usual outfit of honey-brown wool pants, white long-sleeved cotton blouse and knee-high leather boots; finished with a hastily-tied ponytail of her black-brown hair.

Tucking in the last remains of her blouse into the belt of her pants, Masaki gave an eager “hmph” to energise herself before bursting out the room door and dashing up the short flight of stairs to the front deck to greet the open morning.

Back in Eri’s room, a much less dramatic routine was commencing as she folded the quilt neatly and placed it gently back to the edge of the bed. Then, she went on to changing clothes from her frilly night-gown to her usual Gothic style of a knee-length dress completed with a practiced plait of her jet-black hair that flowed down her waist.

Eri scanned her organized room with her two keen eyes before turning the doorknob and climbing up the steps to the deck to start her job.

By eight o’clock, everyone was filed out onto the Sirius’s main deck, taking their list of orders and jobs for the day one-by-one as they lined up in a queue to receive the lists from Ally and Juliana, who were distributing them. By eight thirty, everyone was busy setting to work, either cleaning the ship, checking the facilities, helping out in the kitchen,or maneuvering the ship and keeping watch at the horizon.

However, all these jobs were carried out by men on the ship; so what did the women on board do?
Here’s what.

Wiping the last bits of leftover grime from last night’s dinner, Ally swiped a hand across her forehead to wipe off the sweat that was already forming a thin layer on her skin. She soaked the piece of cloth once again in the bucket of water, squeezing off the excess dirt and water back into the bucket right after. Ally looked at the table that she had just smeared with cleaning solution. The wood gleamed as good as new, awaiting the coming leftover crumbs, sticky rum and more dirt to cover it all over again. Ally sighed sadly at the thought of the destruction of this perfect surface of furniture tonight when the party starts. Reluctantly, she shrugged her shoulders; after all the ship’s crew of men work hard everyday from early morning to late evening, they do deserve fresh bed-sheets, puffed pillows,newly-scented candles and new tables and clean toilets to look forward to after a tiring day’s work. What a fuss. Leaving the shining table alone, she carried the bucket and cloth to the shelves and gripped the soaking piece of fabric, scrubbing patiently at the blackened surface. Ally gave a little sigh as she cleaned; at least her job wasn’t as tough as Eri’s.

Juliana worked quietly to the instructions that were written by Christopher on a piece of paper as she applied the medication onto the injured shipmate’s arm. Then, she took a fresh white roll of wool bandage and wrapped a sufficient amount of it around his arm, allowing it to settle into the wound a little before tucking the equipment away into the correct cupboard. She scribbled a note to inform of the shipmate’s injury and trip to the office before slipping it into his shirt pocket and sending him on his way back to his accustomed duties.
After the shipmate had walked out the door, Juliana got up from her seat and proceeded to arrange the potion bottles and medicine packets into their correct places, efficiently picking up and putting down boxes and containers into their respected places. She sighed.

This was her job everyday since she got onboard the ship; to help out in the nurse’s office. Still, it wasn’t as bad as Eri’s job.

Collecting the ingredients in a big metal bowl, Meiko made her way back to Nathan’s side, placing the bowl gently next to him as he worked, boiling, chopping, dicing, baking and ordering his way around the whole kitchen crew, which is a tough job as far as Meiko can tell. She went across to Thomas to check on his progress and did the same to each and every one of the kitchen crew, inspecting that their work was to the expected standards.

Sure, she needed to run around the kitchen fetching ingredients and then helping some of the team in their work which normally resulted in ending up in dangerous situations with boiling water, hot, baked bread or glistening butcher knives but these things anyone could get used. What really bothers Meiko was the fact that Eri, the youngest of the bunch, needed to perform the most difficult job of them all.

Walking among the hidden corridors of the Sirius where all the barrels of rum, supply of fresh, raw food and preservatives were stored, Masaki continuously peered into the barrels, checking the condition of the foods and supplies, ticking off good ones and crossing off bad ones on herclipboard. Once finished with the food check-list, she moved on to the weapons further down the concealed base of the ship, silently counting and nodding to herself as she moved across each and every essential thing listed on the papers lipped to the clip-board. It was a miracle that she had not decided to steal any food stored. Well, it was REALLY hard to earn Nathan's trust to NOT steal any raw ingredients. Not that she minded raw fish, that is. The job was tiring because Masaki had to bend for along time during some areas of these unseen rooms but she – and everyone of the girls- knew that only her sister’s job could be considered the most foul.

Somewhere in the back of her mind, she had the strong feeling that she might have to punch someone later. Oh well.

***

Coincidentally, when the girls (except Eri) were halfway through their jobs, they stopped at the same time, thought the same thoughts and unanimously let out a sigh of prayer that the youngest girl of the whole gang would be alright.

Hidden by the shadows of the mast and apple barrels,Eri was low in between the many things propped up in the store room of the ship’s front deck. She crawled silently around the corner and risked a peek at the situation of the main deck. The floor was grimy and slippery with dirt and sea water, unlike the usual clean, mopped floor she was used to back on the Sirius. This caused her to slide down occasionally, forbidding her from getting a solid hold of the floor with her foot. Eri mentally scowled to herself -how in the world could these enemy pirates walk so steadily across this hell of a floor?!

Eri quickly ducked back into the shadows as two drunken, grubby pirates swinging rum bottles in their hands lugged by, leavinga strong trail of alcohol and unpleasant odors that suggested a life time without bathing. Eri’s nose scrunched up at this and she tried her best not to make any vomiting noises throughout the moment.

(Maybe, for those smart readers, by now you have guessed the location in which poor Erinica Juliet Kingsly is put in. Yes, she is currently a spy, onboard the ship under the command of Captain Alan, Captain Morgan’s sworn enemy.)

***

As we were talking, Eri had successfully breached into the ship’s control panel and is currently stooped tight into a dark little corner, so that no one even knew she was there. She gave a sharp-eyed scan around the room. The only person who was in it together with her was none other than Captain Alan himself, giving orders from this very control room, not bothering to move his lazy bum. Exactly like Captain Morgan-Eri though amusingly to herself.
