~*~
After the hectic brunch with Iris, Ariel bids farewell to her colleague and returns to the Shatterdome alone. It’s rare to actually walk back to the Shatterdome during this time of the day, let alone being in a satisfied feeling that she’s having now.
It’s odd, even though she wouldn’t say that she’s an extrovert, she still finds it worthwhile to hang out with her colleagues, as they are able to uplift her heavy-laden spirit.
Maybe friends are the reason why a person will never feel lonely.
A pair of familiar faces across the street catches her attention, Ariel stopping dead in her tracks as she narrows her eyes in intense concentration. But to say that she is not surprised by their timely appearance together would be lying.
Besides, aren’t they from opposite crews?
Ariel sucks in a deep breath, about to call out to them when she notices the change of expression on the guy’s face when the girl tells him something. She must have said something funny, because both of them share a laugh over her words, the couple giving off an aura of intimacy.
… Could they be on a… Date?!
Taking the advantage that they did not notice her presence, Ariel lowers her head and walks faster, thanking God above that she is heading the opposite direction from them.
Awkwardness has never been this bad until today.
Come to think of it, Iris did mention to her before that a pair of J-Techs is seeing each other in secret, though Ariel didn’t expect them to be Wan and Kuisma. The Kuisma she knows is a tough female J-tech of Beta Strucker, the other person able to straighten out her team as the assistant to Mundzir. Though of course Ariel can understand why Kuisma would be with Wan; Wan is a nice guy, playing the role of the kind big brother to Ariel as he maintains a playful working atmosphere amongst the Gamma Rapper’s J-tech team.
Or maybe it could have been that one time when Kuisma had a mishap accident involving her scooter on the way to work, resulting in her being hospitalized. Rumors had it that Wan had been the one to look after her, and soon after love blossoms between the two.
As cliché as it sounds, their relationship is not known publicly, so perhaps it could all been just as it is: A scandal.
Ariel shrugs it off and decides to stop overthinking the situation, noting the time of her watch pointing at 1:20 PM. Since she has some free time to kill, she decides to head down to the Kwoon Room.
Known widely as the Combat Room, this is the place where all pilots often spar with their respective co-pilots. Perfect for enhancing their physical synchronization, this is also the place where the Marshall would test out potential candidates for the Jaegar Program. It is not easy to find pilots who are compatible with each other, both mentally and physically.
As silent as she could, she pushes the door open in hopes not to disturb anyone who’s sparring inside, should there be others in there before her. Thankfully she did, because she finds a particular pair of pilots; namely, the Gamma Rapper pilots.
An intense atmosphere is what she stumbles in, the pair circling each other like alpha predators in the fighting ring. Both of them have their weapon of choice –a bamboo katana (Japanese sword)- as their bare feet gracefully glides across the newly polished wooden floor, their swords clanging together as they exchanged quick blows.
She folds her arms, taking note of their form while she sits herself at a nearby bench. Being pilots to a Jaegar that makes use of speed, the pilots have been tasked to place more emphasis on speed, accuracy and agility. As a result, Aaron and Eric have underwent training to increase their own speed, by tying weight plates around their ankles as they jog around the Shatterdome as well as wearing weight plates around their arms as they practice their punches against punching bags that dangle from the ceiling at the corner.
As she watch Eric thrusting the katana towards Aaron’s chest, who deftly leans away and counters with a quick swipe of his own katana. The two holds their position as that, a moment passing before Eric steps away.
“Not bad. Though you could have counter by moving to my side before attacking me again. That position could have been dangerous if you lost your balance and topple.”
“Yeah. My bad.” Aaron scratches the back of his neck. “I guess I actually could have shifted my position and attack you from above, since you did leave your side unguarded.”
Eric nods, satisfied by Aaron’s answer as the older warmly fist-bumps the younger on the chest. “Good. So that makes it 5-4; my win.”
Only when they turn towards their belongings did they notice her existence. Aaron, of course, does this wide-eye expression along with a hand shooting up to hold (presumely) the location of his heart while Eric emits a rather loud gasp.
“Oh my goodness, Ariel! When did you get here? I didn’t even notice- Just kidding, we totally did notice. Did we manage to fool you?”
Ariel resists this sudden urge to punch the two idiots in front of her.
“… How did I agree to put up with you two is still a mystery until today.” She answers instead, getting up to close the distance between them and their belongings as she tosses them their water bottles. They catch with ease, twisting off the cap and simultaneously draining the bottles at one go. Ariel could only shake her head at the sight.
“Don’t forget to rehydrate yourselves every now and then, even if training is important. Understand?” She fixes them a stare with intensity on par as Achik’s when Zul once mixed up the reports of two years after he slipped on wet floor and dropped everything into scattered directions of the floor.
Nothing can compare to the feeling of being agreed to when the two of them voices their agreement to her question.
She rustles through her bag and pulls out their appointment cards, holding out for them to take it. Aaron’s eyebrows furrow together when he notices the cards.
“Check-ups? Again?”
Eric elbows him at the side. “The last time we had to see Dr. Shah was because of your stomach ache. Think of your co-pilot who has to put up with all those pain transmitting over to my side.”
“Okay, okay… I get it. I’ll go with you tomorrow, geez…” Aaron scowls, pitifully rubbing his bruised side as he turns into a sulking man-child. He doesn’t like clinics and doctors in general, though he’s on good terms with Dr. Shah. But he’ll go if he has to pacify his co-pilot who has to share all his problems via the Drift.
Eric tosses a relaxing smile towards Ariel, waving his card about as he restarts the conversation. “The both of us will see Dr. Shah tomorrow then. The sooner we get it done, the faster we’re out of trouble.”
Ariel beams. “Now that’s the spirit! I’ll put you two in at 10 AM tomorrow, since I’m going over to see him later.” She knows she has made the right decision when both of them let out a breath of, no doubt, relief at her decision.
Looks like the three of them really like sleeping in, huh?
Unfortunately for her, Ariel tends to put aside her selfish desires, keeping them until the day when she actually has the day off for her desires to come out to play.
Sleeping in is just the beginning of her slack-off list.
“So how long had you two been in here sparring?” She pops the question as Aaron withdraws a hand towel to wipe his sweat, the man answering on behalf of the pair.
“A few hours. I’d say about three? Though we were warming up for the first half before we got started on the sparring.” Eric hums in agreement over Aaron’s words around the shirt that he’s halfway changing out of, throwing the shirt into his workout bag as he digs out a clean sweatshirt.
“Aaron’s really improving on his accuracy with shooting, so I think we can just focus more on combination attacks.” Eric adds, while Aaron snorts.
“Hah. Your agility is still behind me, so we’ll need to add in Pilates at this rate.”
Eric wrinkles his nose at that idea. “Whatever that is, I don’t want it. Sounds painful.”
Aaron must have tell him something via their shared mental link with each other, because in moments Eric’s cheeks are aflame, the shorter male punching the other man in mid-cackle.
“Don’t just simply imagine me in weird positions! That is just not physically possible!”
“B-But that would really be awesome if you could do it—“
“Then do it yourself, punk!”
“O-Ow! Ariel, save your big brother!”
“Ignore him! Now: Say your prayers!”
“M-Mercy~!! Ariel~!”
Ariel laughs, watching Eric diving on top of Aaron as Eric tickles Aaron’s weak spots. Like children playing in the field, Ariel commits this moment into memory as she overlooks them with the fondness until they stopped, breathless from the euphoria passed seamlessly back-and-forth across the Drift.
“If you two are done, go grab lunch before they run out. After that, go shower and rest up.”
“Yes Ma’am~” Sighing, she leans down and awkwardly pats the two on their fluffy hair. Finally she gets to be the one to touch other people’s hair rather than the other way around.
“I’ll be off now. I’ll text you two later the confirmation.” She waves them goodbye as they wave back, the supervisor walking towards her final destination of the day: the Clinic.
